Red Fox
Red foxes are widespread and abundant in our area of Connecticut. They are identified by their red coat, black legs, and long white-tipped fluffy tail. They prefer a mixture of forest and open fields where they use the edges of these habitats for hunting small rodents, squirrels, rabbits, birds, amphibians and reptiles. They will also eat vegetation, fruit, nuts, insects and garbage. Red foxes are solitary hunters and can be active any time of day but most frequently hunt at dawn and dusk. They vocalize with barks, howls and whines and make a singular raspy scream or bark. Once you recognize it, you’ll hear the sound in scary movie soundtracks!
